AK Marches Toward Spring with New Marketing Strategist Matt Marek

It is a time-honored tradition this time of year for residents of the upper Midwest to cut deals with the weather gods for the emergence of our old friend, Spring. Cabin fever has long set in, as we beg for appearances from the sun and curse even the slightest threat of a snowy day.

New team members can serve as a welcome break from the seemingly never-ending Winter. This March, we welcome our new Marketing Strategist Matt Marek to the AK team. While he can’t control the weather, he will help guide AK’s marketing strategy. Learn a little bit more about Matt in this edition of our employee spotlight.

Q: What is your role at AK?

I am the new Marketing Strategist here at AK and will be managing a variety of duties including website, social media, and video, to name a few.

Q: What is your favorite part about your job?

I haven’t been here very long, but I would have to say the ability to work with such a close-knit team in a fun environment. Seeing the energy that people bring to the office every day makes coming to work fun. Also, I get to write employee spotlights every now and again, so that’s pretty cool.

Q: What do you like to do outside of work?

I stay pretty busy with my wife Jessie and my two young daughters, Mackenzie (4) and Kendall (1). Outside of my family, I am a varsity basketball referee in the winter, and I am a player/manager for the Champlin Park LoGators amateur baseball team.

Q: What is the most interesting job (outside of marketing) that you have had?

I was the backup mascot for a summer college league baseball team for one season. If you are looking for a good way to lose weight, walking around in a large dog costume in 90-degree heat for three hours will do the trick.

Q: Tell us something about yourself people may not know?

As you can probably tell, I have an athletic background. I played college baseball for four years in Iowa and North Carolina.

Q: With that being said, who’s your team?

Twins and Vikings are pretty much 1a and 1b.

Q: What is your favorite food?

Give me ALL THE PIZZA.

Q: If you could vacation anywhere in the world, where would it be?

I went to Aruba on my honeymoon and would love to go back. If I have to choose a place I haven’t been to, it would probably be Australia.

Q: Who is your favorite band or artist?

Wow, too many to name. I am a big indie-rock and early 2000’s pop-punk aficionado. On the flip side, in my short time here at AK Matt Johnson has really gotten me (and the rest of the office, for that matter) into the musical stylings of Lionel Ritchie…That dude [Ritchie] has pipes of GOLD.
