High-Bay Narrow Aisle Selective Rack Installation / Amsoil

Amsoil is a leading manufacturer of synthetic lubricants, serving industrial, automotive, and powersports markets from its distribution facility in Superior, WI. With a long-term goal of increasing storage capacity, improving operational efficiency, and supporting continued distribution growth, the company needed a racking solution built to take full advantage of the building’s vertical space while staying compatible with the narrow-aisle reach trucks already in use in the facility.

The building itself presented a unique design challenge: originally occupied by a previous business, it is divided into multiple separate rooms rather than a single open floor plan. Each area has its own dimensions and constraints, meaning a one-size-fits-all racking layout wasn’t an option for this facility. The solution required a room-by-room approach, optimizing each unique space while keeping the overall system cohesive and operationally sound.

The facility has a 32-foot clear height—enough to support tall selective racking and more vertical storage than the standard warehouse. Because the building was originally built for a different operation, the floor plan is segmented into distinct rooms rather than a continuous open warehouse. This segmentation shaped the design from the ground up. Each room required its own layout to maximize pallet positions within its specific footprint and column grid.

The installation was carried out with Amsoil’s distribution operations running throughout, with no major disruption to daily workflow (a result of careful pre-installation planning and coordination between the AK team and Amsoil’s operations staff).

AK developed a custom selective rack layout to maximize storage capacity in each area of the building. Rather than applying a uniform bay configuration across the facility, the team tailored the layout room by room, accounting for ceiling heights, column placement, reach truck turning requirements, and available floor area in each space.

Steel King’s design team provided collaborative support throughout the process, contributing product expertise and engineering guidance that helped validate the final configuration. The result is a system optimized for the building as it actually exists, not as a standard warehouse would be laid out. Amsoil was left with a storage solution built specifically for their space, their equipment, and their long-term growth plans.

The full installation was completed in one week. AK’s installation crew worked efficiently across the facility’s multiple rooms in sequence. Amsoil’s distribution operations remained active during the installation, and the project was completed with minimal disruption to daily workflow. All installation staff adhered to on-site safety protocols, and the system was implemented with zero safety incidents from start to finish.
