Today’s material handling project spotlight features a successful warehouse move and layout designed by Senior Systems Design Specialist, Brian Koski, and completed with the help of Senior Project Account Specialist, Brenda Harrison. The end-user was an electrical, safety, and industrial supply distributor that provides value-added services to their customers nationwide.

The project started with an inquiry, asking for advice on warehouse space planning. The client was considering the lease of a new space that accommodated their current levels of staff and operations. After being referred to AK Material Handling, our staff conducted some preliminary meetings and took a tour of their existing facility.

The challenge was to confirm that the square footage of the new warehouse space would accommodate current inventory levels and allow room for growth. AK provided preliminary layout options which confirmed the client’s goals would be met. Their product makeup included full pallets, medium boxed products, small parts, drums, and aerosol storage.

The layouts included pallet racks for pull pallets, narrow aisle pallet racks, closed metal shelving for boxed and small parts storage, special racks with drum cradles for the drums, and other racks that were caged to hold aerosols. AK also provided the drawings for the required permits.

As the project developed, the timeline for ordering the new warehouse racks and shelving shortened. The client needed to vacate the existing space and needed to move into the new space by a specific date. Due to AK’s many supplier options, the project was successfully completed on schedule.  The client was also able to trade in their older racks and shelving from their existing facility.
