One common question we always get is, “Which way should I run my rack?”
“Well, there’s not necessarily one simple pallet racking system design answer to that. One common way, from just a storage standpoint, is to run your rack the long way. So, if your building’s rectangular (we will take this upper space for example), you run your rack the long way. In general, that’s going to give you more storage overall than running it the short way. It’s not always the case, but in general, that is a rule to go by. But most of the time, we’re not dealing with just a simple space. Or in this case, this warehouse as before we designated a staging or dock area staging and receiving area. So the space that was once pretty much square is now turned into a rectangle. So we would consider running the rack the long way.
Operationally, that pallet racking system design may or may not make sense. Some people do not prefer to have their rack like that; then they’re tunneling through all of the pallet rack. Depending on flows of traffic, that may not be ideal.
So for a space like this now that is now turned into, say, an “L-shape,” we will want to try a couple of different ways, with the layout depending on the aisle width and a bunch of other factors that may determine the best layout for this warehouse.
