So it is very important to know the style of pallet rack you have. One way to find out which style you have is to visually inspect your frames and beams for any type of numbers logos or abbreviations. Most pallet rack has some sort marking to identify it. Correct beam length for your application is figured by adding the widths of the pallet loads plus a 5" side clearance upright and pallet and 6" between pallet loads.
Beam Measurements:Length is the distance between uprights. Height is measurement top to bottom of the front side of the beam.
Pallet Rack Upright Frame Information
Capacities are based on 48" beam spacing. Depth of frame should be 6" less than pallet. For example, a 48" deep pallet requires a rack with 42" depth.
Frame Measurements:Frame height= (height of pallet + height of beam+ 4" vertical clearance) x number of levels = frame height. See Diagram above.
Pallet Rack Capacity
A common mistake made when purchasing pallet rack is under estimating the capacity of the industrial rack that is needed. Industrial pallet rack beam capacity can be calculated by using the heaviest pallet weight and multiplying that by the amount of pallet positions per beam level. For instance a 3000 lbs maximum pallet weight on 96" beam spans would need to have 6000lbs capacity per beam level. Standard pallet racks are made to hold 2500 lbs per pallet position. Once the beam capacity is estimated then frame capacity needs to be figured. Estimated pallet rack frame capacity can be found by using the capacity per beam level on your rack and finding out the maximum beams spacing the system will be using. Beam spacing needs to be measured from the top of the beam level to the top of the next beam level. If there is a 48" clear between your rack beams when using 4" high beams the frame capacity should be considered on 52" Beam spacing.
Attention:
Pallet rack capacity should be determined by a pallet rack professional and specific for each application and should not be roughly figured or estimated by an untrained professional.
